How to change a BR tax code?

Is it direct with HRMC. Not heard back from my HR dept?

Why are you on a BR tax code in the first place?
It may be very simple to change but a lot depends on what has happened so far.0 -
If you did not give a P45 or New Employee's statement (used to be a P46) to your employer, then handing over either or both of those should help.
Otherwise, you'll need to speak to HMRC.Signature removed for peace of mind0 -
Has to be HMRC who issue any change of code. Your HR department can't do it otherwise.0

Set up a tax personal account at https://www.gov.uk/personal-tax-account
You'll be able to put in your estimated salary or wages and this will trigger a coding notice being sent to the employer via the payroll system0
