Retired but starting new self-employment

My OH already completes a self-assessment tax form, as was a director of his own limited co.
That is now closed as he is over SPA, but this tax year he has been doing some self-employed work.
He won't be paying NI, but does he need to explicitly register with HMRC as self-employed, or can he just addit to the next self-assessment form for this tax year?

How much profit does he expect to make? You can earn up to £1,000 profit from self employment before it is taxable/needs to be declared.
Otherwise yes, he needs to register: https://www.gov.uk/set-up-self-employed0 -
Thanks Dox. He will earn more than the minimum, but not enough to be anywhere near VAT registration (thank goodness).Reason we were unsure is that, using the web address you gave, and following the link for "Register for self-employment" the next web page says:As he has been sending returns for some years, and won't pay NI, we wondered if he was already covered.
"If you have to send a tax return and did not send one last year, you need to register for Self Assessment and Class 2 National Insurance" (my bold)

as he is already registered for self assessment, he doesn't need to register again. when he completes his tax return, he will need to declare self employment there.LHW99 said:Thanks Dox.
