  • I think that is sensible. If you havent worked for most of your adult life and now in your 40’s you might find all your energy is drained just by having a job and nothing left to renovate a wreck. I bought a project at 20 - I absolutely hated it. Id rather spend my money living somewhere nice and enjoy my non work time
  • Have you considered buying property abroad? (I don’t know much about it) A friend of a friend has recently purchased a property in France for around 17k very much a project with land. Just a thought?

That's not the reason why I have taken the decision! The only reason is a lack of funds.  If I had the cash, I would do it tomorrow.  While it is true I have not "worked" in paid employment for much of my adult life, I was a carer to a partner.  If you know anything about being a full time carer, it's one of the hardest "jobs" there is.  It's mentally and physically draining. Compared to this, my new job will be a walk in the park.

I did think about this and I suppose it's great if you are coming up to retirement and have a nice pension pot and considerable savings.  It would be like being on holiday every day!  But I don't speak French and have little prospect of securing employment there.  As a holiday home it would be nice, however all my contacts and employment prospects are in the UK and that's where I need to live.

Leaving the property question out of this for a moment.

I am very surprised with no work history, and the current work situation caused by the CV19,   you have walked into the job paying £38K pa, how have you kept your work knowledge up to date?
Equally with no work history, how have you managed to have so much in savings........  you could be the answer we all need to know...........come on do tell us how.

I was professionally qualified before I became and carer and had a decent job.  My current job is through a friends contact, and I have not walked into any job - I have been unemployed for a number of years!  If it was not for my friend I would probably still be unemployed, although I am fussy on what I am willing to work for.  If I had been willing to work for a lower salary, I am sure I would have got something years ago. As for my savings, it's really not very much. If you average it out, it only amounts to a couple of thousand saved per year for casual work. As an example, my friends gave me some money when I helped them with their renovation.
