Financial support for mature student?

Hi All,
Got made redundant from my senior manager position(retail) a few months ago and looking into a complete career change to teach geography at secondary school level.
I've already got my geography degree (although will need to majorly refresh my knowledge given I graduated 22 years ago!), so I only need to complete my 1 year PGDE course (I'm in Scotland).
Does anyone know what financial support there is for mature students? From my own investigations it looks like a student loan and not very much else? It seems crazy that if I sat on my bum I'd get more money on UC, but because I want to better myself I lose out? Am I missing something?
As usual, TIA for any help.

Best starting point is whichever college you plan to apply to for your PGDE course. They should be fully familiar with mature students changing career and what sources of funding are available.0

Ring the training providers you are interested in and ask about funding and grants available.0
