Decent mortgage broker

Where to start and what to look for.
Any advice please

  • Recommendations from family and friends is always a good one.   Stick a facebook post up asking if anyone can recommend one.   A lot of people in my area just stick it on the selling sites and then dozens of people tag the brokers they have used, find one who is recommended a lot and contact them.

  • My husband and I are first time buyers, hoping to use H2B to buy a new build in November. We have used James Leighton advisors (recommended by the developer and a free service), and they have so far been very good. Bearing in mind we have only completed the qualifying check and the AIP with Halifax. I would however strongly recommend them, judging from our own experience and the very positive Google reviews from other buyers.
  • Some of us who post here are independent brokers. We are identifiable by our signatures. You can also search the boards and pm a broker who you feel gives good advice. We are not allowed to contact posters but most of us are happy to respond to pm's asking for help.

Although be on guard with that.    Several times recently there have been posts like that in our community group and the name that comes up the most frequent is a St James Place sales rep who is expensive.   He is very personable and people like him but that doesn't get past the fact he is a tied sales rep and expensive

Most small localised independent mortgage brokers do the job perfectly well and efficiently.     Avoid the estate agent based brokers or builder recommended brokers (caveat: some small local estate agents will use  local independent brokers). They have a poor reputation.

I am an Independent Financial Adviser (IFA). The comments I make are just my opinion and are for discussion purposes only. They are not financial advice and you should not treat them as such. If you feel an area discussed may be relevant to you, then please seek advice from an Independent Financial Adviser local to you.
