Can't contact architect and can't progress extension

In early July I contacted a local architect to produce plans for a home extension. I went with him because he had done quite a few in the same style locally.

The contract was for half up front and half when the drawings were completed and submitted to planning.

He produced the drawings to the agreed timescale and I had some email exchanges where I queried a couple of minor design points. There was one question he needed to recheck with his structural engineer so the drawings weren't agreed or submitted.

Since then, 4 weeks ago, I've not been able to get hold of him by email or phone and no one has been in his office when I've gone past. I've been told elsewhere that I can't use or submit the plans myself because the copyright isn't mine and that would open me up to legal action.

As it stands I've paid £900 and my extension is completely stalled. 

I thought something may have happened to him given covid but Facebook shows otherwise.
