suspended on full pay - got new job- should I tell em?

Got a job with national supermarket as lockdown happened.  Long story short, I got into a dispute with them and I am suspended on full pay for gross misconduct.  Sounds worse than it is!  I don't think I did anything wrong and now they don't know what to do with me as this has been going on for WEEKS with no word from them whatsoever.  A full investigation would expose serious failings within the company.   I've got a new job but didn't mention the dispute at interview.  Is this going to give me trouble?  Remember I'm resigning, not being sacked!!

  • Is your new employer likely to contact them for a reference?
  • don't know - I put two professional friends down as referees
New employer might just be happy with the P60 or whatever it is

Maybe worth resigning from your supermarket job to see what happens?

potentially if they want a reference from your previous employer then it could say you resigned while under investigation for gross misconduct.

However if it’s a national supermarket chain they’ll probably only provide a generic reference to say you were an employee between certain dates.

Which is normally read as "guilty as charged" I'm afraid!

As JReacher1 says, many employer just provide a basic generic reference. If that is the case then there is unlikely to be a problem. Legally of course they can say anything they like as long as it is true and not deliberately misleading.

Not giving your current employer as a reference will normally ring alarm bells. Obviously it depends on the level of job and the diligence or otherwise of the HR department. If they know who your current employer is and you don't give them as a reference, you do risk the potential employer's HR picking up the phone to their opposite number for some off the record confirmation.

To be honest I would list them as a reference and rely on the probability that they will just churn out a generic dates of employment type reference.

I agree with UV, I think not putting your current employer down would be a red flag to me if I were hiring.

I think it's unlikely they'll say anything if they're a national supermarket. Especially if they're worried about some kind of whistleblowing claim from you they will probably just be happy to let you go on your merry way having resigned.

reading your title, I thought this thread was going to ask whether you need to tell your current employer that you have a new job or whether you could continue on full pay while suspended and take the new job!
