Gym membership contracts

Options
I’m a member at a gym and due to health reasons I’ve kept my membership on hold however before COVID my son had swimming lessons there. His membership was on hold until the lessons started back again. However I don’t want him to go back to the club as A I’m not a member and B I’m not happy with their set up etc. C my health in gym -if I’m not willing to go into it I don’t want my son to.

When I signed the DD contract in December they are claiming that I am subject to paying up to Dec this year even though they closed for 4 months - and I still have  to pay the DD £33 PLUS his gym membership £17 - which due to his age he can’t actually use any of the facilities without my supervision and it too old to use the gym kids club as they only offer u5s.

Any advise on how I can get out of the contract. They are currently trying to charge me for Aug swim fees (no swimming was on in August) and then September onwards.

Thanks in advance

  • It sounds as if you may be able to refute the August fees, but you're contracted to pay for September to December.
  • Good morning. Once gyms reopened I decided to join a new gym. After having a look around I signed up and filled my DD form. The gym operates a booking system and closes for 15 minutes for cleaning around every 1 and half hours. Since the kids have gone back to school and changes in my shifts these times don’t fit my schedule at all and I struggle to get anymore.
I’ve only been there a month and apparently had a cool off period which was never explained to me. I sent several emails asking to cancel my contract but apparently I signed up for 12 months.
Any advice on how I may be able to terminate? Seems a waste of money for something I can’t use.

Given you signed up after re-opening you should have been aware of the booking rules before signing up. Cooling-off period is usually 14 days so you have probably passed that time.
Unfortuantly you should have done your research better before agreeing to a contract.
