Handing in notice whilst on SSP and benefits available

Hi asking for a friend.

He has worked at a company for 9 years and is on SSP (been off sick for around 2 months).  He has decided to hand his notice in.   Notice period is 1 month - will this be paid SSP or salary as still signed off?    
Also, what benefits can he claim after?  He is a home owner (shared).

    If he was in full time employment he may be able to claim New Style ESA if he continues to get medical certificates from his GP.  Otherwise it would be a claim for UC.
  • If your friend only has to give 1 week statutory notice of resigning, he is entitled to receive full pay even if he's off sick. 

    If there is any contractual notice (usually 4 weeks, but could be more depending on the contract), he will only be entitled to receive SSP during this period.

    Please can you tell me where the law requires an employer to pay full pay rather than SSP for a week when it is the employee who has resigned not the employer who has dismissed?
