Week in hand rules

Options
Hi, I've just left my employment and had my week in hand back from the start of my employment. They have given me my week in hand back at the rate it was at 10 years ago but I'm sure I've read somewhere (can't find it now though) that your week in hand is returned to you on whatever wage/contract you're on at that time of leaving. Can anyone shed any light on this please? Thanks

as far as i understand, a week in hand means you are paid weekly in arrears.  so you should have your last week of pay at the current rate.

Look at your pay slips will tell you as it should say what period of work the payment covers.

I don't like the "in hand" term, just a personal thing, but you are normally paid one week in arrears due to the practicalities of making payments to all employees on the same day and avoiding the issues of people being off sick/going home early etc. So you start on Monday 1st and then on Friday 12th get paid for the week of the 1st to the 7th, then Friday 19th get paid for week of 8th to 14th etc so you are always just one week (or 5 days in this example) behind. As such if you finished working there on Friday 19th then the pay on the 26th would be for the week of the 15th to 21st at the rate for that week.

It would be very odd for them to do it in the way you suggest such that in the above example the first payment being on the 12th would be for the week of the 8th to the 14th with them keeping the first week in their pocket... legally it could be done in which case when that 1st week is eventually paid it would be on the original rate but it means they are paying for work in advance in some cases which may not be worked and so creates the mess that they hope to avoid by paying in arrears.

Weekly in arrears is different to week in hand.

You need to know the pay period and the pay day for that period.

typically week in had you would work a week and get paid at the end of the following week.

The final pay should include the pay for the last week at the end on top of the previous week.

(week in arrears would be paid at the end of the week you work)
