Give them a weeks notice. If nothing else it's the professional thing to do.

    Darren
this is standard notice period when you are on prabation from the employer and employee, so i agree that this would be a reasonable notice period.

If the offer had come through last week what money would you have be getting before the start date?

Did you close down any JSA claim?  if you give notice and they let you go then JSA might fill the gap

would the new job be interested in starting you earlier?

Very good points. I've not closed down my JSA claim yet for exactly that reason, my new employer wanted me to start next Tuesday but they demanded an answer that day and said if I didn't reply by the COP that day then they would have to roll forward my start date by a week. I think it's because of the Covid implications they only do inductions starting on a Tuesday every week.

Another thought does this place have things like employee handbooks that refer to basic conditions as they can form part of a contract if you know about them.

    Yesterday...
I would have asked the new place that if you could make Tues next week can you start then rather than a week later
if they said yes resign from current job end of day.

Complying with the statutory legislation is professional, the company has had the opportunity to provide particulars of employment that include contractual terms for notice.

At least they were decent enough to be honest that it was potentially just a seasonal job they could have just taken you on and just let you go after Xmas if not needed.

. . . and in this case have we not established that statutory notice is nil?

Employee statutory notice of a week only kicks in at 1 month or more
they have been there less than a month.
