Strange Inheritance

Due to some odd circumstances my husband has ended up inheriting half of his brothers house, which his brother still lives in. It’s been nearly 4 years now and whilst my brother in law and my husband have agreed they must talk, we continue to pay a £1000 mortgage whilst the brother lives rent-free and mortgage free.
Before we get too entrenched, what are our options?
The brother is a lorry driver nearly 50 no dependents and lives alone.
The property is probably worth £300,000 maybe more.
We would be prepared to take a deal.
My husband is unwilling albeit head in the sand to talk about any legal enforcement.

Yes definitely its an option. He can charge rent on his half of the house. Sell his half to him, try and force a sale through the court. Not sure what else0
