Having a bad day

Oh i am really not a happy bunny today. I am sooooo sick of worrying about money!

Had a meeting with my boss yesterday, i work in sales and my target has rocketed for next year and i have worked out unless a miracle happens i am going to be earning a lot less commision than i have this year, this time of year is very quiet for me at work so i have been taking home probably £300-£400 less a month than usual, and as i only came across this site about 2 months ago had not pre planned by budgetting to suffer this loss in money. I have just checked my bank account 50 quid i have got! 50 measley quid untill the 21st Dec. How the hell do i manage to get myself into this situation! I have our works Xmas do next Thursday as well.

Christmas is supposed to be a happy time but for me is certainly will not be this year, i havent brought any Xmas presents this year as i am buying a flat in the new year so a lot of my money has gone on fees, am already freaking out about how i am going to cope when i do move and am thinking i am going to have to dip into the money i have put away for the rest of my fees just to get by this month.

Sorry to moan! Just need osme words of encouragement :(:(:(

Don't worry Frags everyone needs a good moan now and then!

I wouldn't worry about not buying xmas presents for people. People do understand how expensive it is buying a home, moving etc. There is no point running up unnecessary debt just because it's xmas (it will only make you feel worse in the new year!).

Regarding work, would it be worthwhile maybe looking for another job in the new year? Or maybe a 2nd job temporarily to boost your income a bit?

Yes this may have to be an option, i have put together a very stict budgetting plan for when i move house and if i dont earn a minimum of £1200 per month i will sink, i think i may need to have a chat with my boss and just let her know that i am very worried about the coming year.
  • Yes it can't do any harm, my work have been very understanding about financial situation at times. I never actually asked for payrises but I have a sneaking suspicion that some of my bonuses may have been more due to them feeling sorry for me than my fantastic work.

    Hi Frags,

Just wanted to offer my support, last Xmas we were very skint, we had just moved house and were in debt.

All the family knew and they were all happy to receive gifts that I had made, and I'd bought a lot from charity shops. To me Xmas is about spending time with family not about buying presents. Try not to worry about it too much.

Be selfish with the presents. You're making a big investment with the flat and that's got to be the focus of your spending...

Organise a housewarming party and lay on some food when you're in and settled, and give invites out now to your friends and family in lieu of presents. Explain the logic behind it to them and I'm sure they'll appreciate it.

    Just an idea?
  • not got much to add but just wanted to give you a hug. I am having to do christmas with no money this year so can totally empathise with you however, I am not afraid to tell people that I cant afford presents and I am sure that a lot of them were thinking they wished they were that brave. What being on the boards has taught me is that many people try to live to conform to others perceived expectations and it only leads to financial problems.

Therefore, jazz up an outfit already in your wardrobe and enjoy every moment of you xmas night out. Dont worry about spending money, (even if you have to drink water).

Look to the fact that in the new year, you will have a new home and that will be worth all the hardship.

If it's a work doo, are they putting a bit of cash in the pot for a few drinks?
  • Can you negotiate a different package which increases your basic and reduces your comission/bonus. This would help long run since you get more guarenteed income per month which makes it so much easier to budget.

I know how you feel about Christmas. I'm feeling much the same at present. Almost like I'll just be pleased to get it over and done with so my finances can get back to normal. How sad is that :embarasse

Just think so many people are in the same position as us but they don't share it with those close to them.

As least you've taken the first steps to dealing with your issues.

    take care
