Why does MSE insist on creating new threads when there already is one for the same topic?1 -
Presumably because they usually create a link to an 'official' forum thread (which they can own/manage/control) from their news stories (thread titled the same as the news piece and first post in a standard template format, so probably auto-generated to a certain extent), and obviously it takes them some time to write the story up in the first place, so in most cases there'll already be an 'unofficial' thread created before the MSE one, thanks to the ever-vigilant forum members who can start a thread in seconds without being held accountable to any editorial standards!EarthBoy said:Why does MSE insist on creating new threads when there already is one for the same topic?4 -
Doesn't stop them linking to the pre-existing one - or even combining them - does it!?eskbanker said:

My belief, as I've stated before on these things, is that they just don't bother to check for existing threads. And/or can't comprehend that two threads on one subject will confuse, not help.1 -
I'm just speculating but, as above, suspect that such threads will be created at least semi-automatically when publishing the news pieces and also imagine that it's important to them to be in control of these, i.e. if their news story was linked to an 'unofficial' thread whose first post was subsequently edited by its creator then that wouldn't be ideal, so they presumably prefer to have the news story linked to a thread created by an MSE staffer.Zanderman said:

No doubt they could link to existing threads or combine them though, but I'd perceive it as a conscious policy decision not to, rather than laziness....1
