Gathering funds in a trusted way for a community project

Hi
I'm the project lead for a neighbourhood project and I'd like to obtain financial contributions from neighbours in a trusted fashion, and then use the funds to pay a supplier.
How can I do this? I've looked at the various gofundme and crowdfund type sites but it's not clear how theiir processes work, they all just want you to sign up - plus there's a fee of course!
Is there a cheaper/free way to DIY this so that everyone can contribute in a risk-free way? Rather like an escrow account?
I'd prefer not to go down the formation of a Not For Profit association with committee, AGMs, elections etc. etc. and then applying for a bank account as I'm assuming it'll be long and tedious for a one-off project that's around £1k.

Um, well not exactly, but there was no other suitable place to post.

GoFundMe seems good enough. Recently set one up for my cat who has been diagnosed as diabetic and I'll struggle to pay the first vet bill, anything left over I'll donate to Cat Protection. From what I could see, there wasn't much of a fee. GoFundMe just seems the saver way.
