Anyone had experience of taking an individual to court/mediation over not returning a deposit

I've paid a deposit for an item I had to back out of. The seller now claims  he can keep the deposit which is clearly in dispute particularly because of wording on the receipt and from verbal and written communications where he had already agreed to return the deposit.
Has anyone had experience of a similar claim situation.

TIA
