I don't have much advice to offer here, other than to say its probably best if your parents have a chat with a mortgage broker. He/she will be able to give them a sense of what type of product might be available for 'later life' borrowing and how much they could get. It's all about affordability.1

There are some little hidden gems looking outside the cities, tell them not to rule out a flat either.
