Should I stay or go to Tescos???

Hi ,

Due to return to work in Jan from Maternity Leave and thinking about possibly just going to work @ my local tescos. I work for a chartered surveyors and for many years thoroughly enjoyed my job, however when I was pregnant @ work it seemed different they were different and now I have a little one it I think it will remain different.

I am returning to work for 4 days a week 8-5 with the little one in childcare for those hours at approx £450pm. Obviously dropping a day a week has made a dent in my wage and will prob be taking home £900pm. I did get commissions, am I still entitled to these or not, I think they will try not pay me them.

So would I be better off working @ tescos in evenings and possibly sending little one to nursey 1 day a week, we only need £600 to survive (as would be saving £400 from no nursery).

We will be having another baby, I never got a mat package just standard does Tesco have there own package??

Thanks

S

All things being equal - What do YOU want to do?

Legally you can't be treated any differently either as a mum-to-be or a mum, but we all know that socially some people do treat you differently. However, when it comes to things like commission there is no option, if you were entitled before and you are doing the same job you will be entitled again and any employer that tries to argue otherwise is on very shaky ground.

Having said that, balance this with not putting your little one into childcare and having a reasonably stress free job in the evenings. (I've heard Tesco are good employers). Also think about what happens after baby number 2 - childcare costs will be doubled and I found two children much more difficult to organise and manage. Tesco might be a good option then.

Could you try your old job first, and if it doesn't work out try Tesco's?

    Thanks for the reply.

I will be going back to work @ my current employers and will see how it goes with pay etc, might see if I could drop another day and maybe work all day Saturday. I myself am in limbo about what I want, I want to be with my child, I also want a relatively good lifestyle and I do want to work, I suppose i need to think hard about things.

I think when we decide to have a second child I will then have to work evenings/weekends etc as like you said 2 childcare bills are going to be a lot. I think there are a few factors we need to look into (when we will have 2nd child etc, bills etc) I think I am just getting nervous/anxious about returning!

    Thanks again!

I don't see why it has to be Tescos or nothing?

You're obviously a motivated, professional person....there are loads of companies out there looking for part time people. Even office weekend work (which is what I do) so it's ideal from a chidlcare perspective if your husband can step in.....even gives him alone time to bond etc .

You've also obviously also got skills which you can port to another position......I think you should have a serious look around.

btw....I found my job through the job centre (of all places.....was astounded at the range of vacancies they had, but that was six years ago). Over the years, I have mode the job the one I want it to be (with associated salary). It can be done.

You don't have to work on a till to get flexibility!

I agree with what has been said by others ubt wanted ot add, you shouldn't assume that working in Tesco will be stress free! They do have good HR policies ata national level but at a local level (IMO) its very much a push/shove atmosphere and people aren't general treated very well, the management are rubbish at people management and for the nine months i worked there the 16hrs a week I did at Tesco were 10 times more stressful than the 40hrs I ddi in my main office job. Its very hard work and very stressful dealing with the public all the time.If you enjoyed your job before you went on maternity leave then I think you should give it a go, things might be different than you think, also if you didn't go back wouldn't you have to repay the maternity payments?Sam
