Since being made redundant in May that's how many interviews I've had.

Every job is now receiving hundreds of applicants so the competition is very high. Getting 13 interviews and in the last one getting to the final two is a great achievement.

Eventually you’ll get a role. Don’t give up

My wife and I have applied for hundreds of jobs since April and she has had only one interview, I haven't had any. This is a really dire situation.
  • Sorry to hear this, and it's certainly tougher for everyone at the moment.
Curious, were salary expectations discussed during your last 2 interviews?
In my opinion an interview consists of 2 parts : technical and interpersonal.
Sounds like you are acing the technical part, just need to work on the interpersonal bit.
Do more research on the company, and if possible the interviewer or people in the department you would be working in.
Try to bring this up during the interview. Ask questions which stands out, makes the interviewer remember you for going the extra mile.

I work in a sector that has always been hard to recruit for, I used to have adverts out in some areas for 3 months with 1 applicant. Now I’m getting 100 plus applicants per job. The fact you’re getting to interview is a really good sign. I know it’s hard to stay motivated as my husband is in the same position and can’t secure even a temporary post at the moment. It really does take its toll. Keep going, I know there’s nothing I can say that’ll make you feel any better but if you keep persisting it’ll eventually go in your favour. On my linkedin I’m starting to see people posting more often that they’ve secured a job where as a few weeks ago it was all redundancy posts. LinkedIn is a good place to network and get yourself out there as well, I’ve seen a lot of people securing posts on there.

You are doing really well getting to the interview stage so often, as that's the biggest hurdle when there are so many applicants. It's difficult to know if you're just really unfortunate at not being the best candidate being interviewed each time, or whether there's room for improvement in your interview skills. Is there anyone you know who would give you a mock interview to see what they think?

Don't listen to me, I'm no expert!

The fact that you are getting interviews should be seen as a positive. Keep going. You'll get a break sooner or later.

it is hard going at the moment and people are competing for jobs.  hang on in there OP and don't give up hope.  try to make the interviewers feel your pain in a subtle way, by showing enthusiasm and how much you want the job.  try to make them like you, as when it comes to lots of people with good CVs, they will choose the person they like the most as they think he will fit in best and get along with everyone else the best.

I just wanted to say good luck and keep going - it’s tough out there and from having been on the recruiting side a lot I know how often great candidates don’t get the job for a variety of reasons (which I’ve since used to comfort myself when I didn’t get a job). At the moment there are SO many people out there looking it’s hard but one day you’ll be the lucky one walking away with the job.
