I've been renting my flat and then moved in with my partner whilst looking after my elderly mum to get the extra income whilst working in low paid part-time job. myMtenant moved out in Feb 20 and so was getting no rental income until now - I have found a new tenant to cover the rent and am no longer caring for my mother as she passed away. But I have lost my job. Can I apply for any benefits given the rental income just covers the mortgage on my flat and the service charge? The government site is a minefield and isn't clear on this.

You can apply for benefits, but your income will be taken into account. The tax payer isnt there to pay your mortgage off2

I wasn't assuming the taxpayer would pay my mortgage, but thanks for your (sharp) reply. I've always paid my taxes and never claimed any benefits and am over 50. Many people at the moment are in dire and unprecedented financial difficulty - all of these situations are varied and different hence putting the question out there/here. As I say, it's a minefield...0

I think it partly depends on when you last worked, and whether you were earning enough to pay National Insurance (or for your employer to have to do that). I am no expert, but you might be entitled to some Contributions Based - well it used to be JSA. Maybe it's all changed, take a look at https://www.turn2us.org.uk/ and see what you find there.
I'm sorry for your mum's death. Did she own her own home? If you're also dealing with her estate, the Deaths, Funerals & Probate board is your friend.Signature removed for peace of mind0 -
