Amazon Marketplace importing: watch out!

Options
My dad recently ordered 5 individual DVDs from Amazon Marketplace. The seller was in the US. Imported individually, the DVDs would not have attracted customs charges. However, the seller combined the 5 orders into one big one, so there was a charge of nearly 50% on top to pay in addition to the cost of the merchandise. No discount was given by the seller.

I checked the rules on Amazon but they don't seem to cover orders that are combined and thus incur customs charges.

Has anyone had similar experiences, or suggested to Amazon they revise their policy to prevent this sort of thing happening (i.e. the seller combining items to save money, while the buyer has importing fees to pay)?

So, my advice is, leave a couple of days between your orders if you're getting multiple things from the same seller, and the seller's outside the EU.

Customs fees are up to the buyer to pay and to sort out. If I bought 5 things from a US seller, I would not expect 5 packages!
