Have my cohort of healthcare students been at a total loss?

Options
Starting as a physiotherapy student in 2018, only a few years removed from when nhs funded courses were still a thing for Nursing, Physio etc, then only in the third and final year of the course, does the £5000 grant/bursary for healthcare students come into effect, so the first two years, no support really. Does this mean that my cohort, as well as the previous year to me (who paid full tuition fees, and got no grant/bursary for any years), are at a complete loss? Would it have been better to have waited a year and started through an apprenticeship route? or wait two years to at least get the £5000 for the 3 years? It seems like there is a group of healthcare students now, who are going to qualify soon, and go into an NHS which is now really struggling after covid, and have not had any good financial support along the way? Hopefully I am being clear in my explanation/thoughts, but realistically, just feels like for me as a healthcare student, we have really been dealt a bad hand and if there is anything that will be done or can be done about it.

Given you've already committed to the course, it doesn't really matter.

You can't switch your funding to a historic or future system.

And it's unlikely all of you are a complete loss. There's got to be a few decent students in your year.
  • I understand what you mean, i am still getting the degree, but my career plans are being changed significantly because of this.

I don't mean a loss in that sense, I know some decent students will be produced, just that those students that are produced will not have been as well funded as those only about 2 years before or after them, those after my year group receive a bursary they don't need to pay, the years before me had NHS funded degrees, but the government an uni system as let us slip through it seems.

Life isn't fair, get over it. The sooner you do the quicker you'll be able to move on and progress instead of being stuck where you are stewing about something you can do nothing about. There will be plenty of times in your life where you're either a winner or a loser because of changes in policy, it's just the luck of the draw. I'm usually in the category that loses out as I seem to end up regularly being one of those who slips through the net but it hasn't prevented me from getting on in life.
