    I would guess that they work these deals by placing a particularly large order with their supplier at a one-off special price.  That probably only works if the supplier can achieve a better economy of scale, i.e. they need to be making a very large quantity of a few products rather than a bit more of lots of products.  So Lidl probably has to choose 3 varieties to be featured.
