Transfer of deed without a solicitor

Am taking out a joint mortgage; I am currently the sole owner. Assuming that I am aware of the risks etc, can I simply enable this transfer myself with the land registry? Or it there a legal requirement to do it through a solicitor. Perhaps I'm being naïve but it looks very straightforward on the .gov site and I'm fully aware of the risks of transfer, have done a lot of research. So would be reluctant to pay someone circa £300 for doing what I could do myself!

The lender will be instructing a solicitor to deal with the remortgage (which you'll be paying for, unless you get a deal with free legals). In theory you can do your bits of the transfer of title without being represented by the same (or any) solicitor, but it has to complete simultaneously with the remortgage, and it'll just end up more fiddly than it's worth not to let the solicitors do the transfer of title as well.

Unfortunately your mortgage lender will wish to protect their own interests, to this end a solicitor that is on their panel will be required to undertake the legalities.
