The chiropractor called today to confirm the interview. She seems very hot on ensuring she's not shortlisting any time wasters, i. e. making sure it's definitely just part time hours that candidates want and won't be leaving after a couple of months for a full time job, etc.

Went for lunch with my mum today, though, and she thinks it's a terrible idea to go for this interview in case I get it, have to give up my FE hours and then the practice goes bust 🙄 So, that filled me with optimism 😂
Is that your mother's usual cheery self then? Some people are just like that.

AND did you ask for her opinion, or did she just give it?

You're a grown up. Make your own decision. FE isn't the secure job it used to be: you might stay where you are and be made redundant next month.

    Pretty much 😂

I just think she mulled on it after I mentioned it, but I suppose it did echo my own concerns.

Everything is a risk, and I agree about FE, I wouldn't be surprised if cuts started to happen as I don't think they'll need as many support staff as they currently have. But, likewise, there are always rumours of cuts, so who knows.

Mind you, the chiro did seem a bit intense. She said I hesitated when offered an invite to interview, which I found a bit odd. She does seem quite concerned about time wasters, but found it a bit weird to have to defend myself that I didn't intend to hesitate when answering her 🤷‍♀️

Go to the interview with your senses fine tuned. It may be the chiro was having a bad day phoning potential interviewees and has suffered from time wasters in the past. Or it may be that they are a complete nightmare to work for.

Just don't tell your mum till you've made your mind up which it was ...

  • Well, I am glad I went for the interview.

First of all, the job, as stated in the ad, is for three days. However, the ad stated Mon-Fri, which suggested a rota basis, but it is actually set days, Mon-Wed, which is far better as if I got it, I could still work FE hours, at least initially.

I did actually ask about the lock down situation and if she felt secure going forward given the current climate. She said with absolute confidence that the business is well established and secure and she has no worries about its future. That the practice has very loyal, returning patients and she's currently having to book in patients outside office hours. She did actually look run off her feet when I went.

She does seem a very no-nonsense type and knows exactly what she wants in an employee. She mentioned a second round of interviews, which given the job seems excessive, but it's a tiny practice and she wants the right fit.

Still a pity my other interviews weren't sooner, but we shall see.

What are you complaining about? A second interview buys you time.

Oh no, it's not a complaint. Just seemed a tad unusual given the job itself, but she is basing much of it on personality, I think.

It would actually only buy me a small amount of time. Not enough to attend the other interview.

    Thank you, Smodlet👍
  • She has her own business, personality is her reputation, her reputation is everything.

I would be exactly the same as her - people working for me need to be 'just right' and checking the candidates outlook, attitude, personality, aptitude, just as much as their professionalism is all part of the 'whole'.

I don't know why you'd think a chiropractic clinic would be an insecure business right now!  My chiro was open for almost the whole of lockdown, and they do incredibly well as a private practice, since they can charge whatever fees they like.  The only reason it would be at risk would be if they are not running the business properly, have cashflow problems, and therefore couldn't withstand a few weeks of lockdown again.  Certainly far more secure than retail, hospitality, tourism, leisure, factories etc.  NHS is likely to be far more secure, but it also has its cons.  Swings and roundabouts.  No need to even decide unless you get offered the job.  Good luck. :)
' <-- See that? It's called an apostrophe. It does not mean "hey, look out, here comes an S".
  • Well, yes, fuss over nothing as I didn't get offered it 🤷‍♀️
