Compensation for Dental Treatment

Options
Hi folks

Just looking for some advice. My husband was the victim of a dentist who was jailed for carrying out unnecessary treatment & using dirty needles on patients. My husband was in his teens so can’t remember exactly what treatments were carried out but remembers having a lot of work done that he didn’t need, he went for a checkup once & getting up 8 teeth taken out!

This was in the mid 1990’s & it’s still causing him issues. His front tooth fell out completely randomly the other evening. He had an x-ray & it turned out he’d had root treatment in that tooth & he didn’t even know about it. His parents didn’t know either so it must have been done without consent.

We wondered if he could claim for compensation for this? It’s still affecting him years later and was a very unpleasant experience.

Thanks very much

Louise

Unfortunately he would need to complain within three years of becoming aware of the issues.
The dentist would have been struck off and no records would still be available after all these decades and thirty years later it would be impossible to prove problems now would have been caused by treatment so long ago. So sorry no there is no way he could claim compensation after all this time.

It's a bit late to claim compensation now. Is the dentist still even working? Some kind of therapy might help your husband to come to terms with what happened but as for compensation, it seems to be a bit of a long shot.

Thank you, hadn’t realised about the time frame.

He’s never thought about it before. He just moved on but what happened with his front tooth has really angered him.

I'm sure I was a victim of a drill and fill dentist.  Three other people who went to the same dentist have said they think they've had unnecessary work done on their teeth.  I've recently found out that two crowns had had root canal treatment and posts put in, this was news to me.   Back in the eighties whilst having a checkup the dentist said he could change the fillings in my four front teeth, I wasn't happy with the teeth, the middle two went slightly back and they had small fillings in. I asked him if he could crown them for me and he did, (nhs), there was plenty of tooth there so I now can't understand why I had to have root canal and posts put in.  When he  retired and I changed dentist the dentist questioned why I'd had so much work done, he said  I must of had really bad teeth or someone had gone mad in my mouth. I was with that dentist for several years, I had no more tooth decay whilst I was with him and the only work I had done was having to have old fillings replaced.  I know there's nothing I can do about it now, but I have to live with the consequences.

I know that some dentist on the past have done unnecessary work on their patients,  I knew someone and she told me her dentist had a prison sentence for it, he was taking healthy teeth out, her inciuded, this had given her a fear of going to the dentist. Ive asked the dentist who I go to now, the one that's told me I've had root canal treatment and posts put in why it was done if there should of been plenty of tooth there, but he's said he can't comment because he didn't see the teeth at the time.

My husband was phobic about the dentist, he is much better but it has taken years.  He used to say the dentist his family saw was a sadist, his mother used to laugh and say he was a wonderful dentist.  I just thought it was part of his phobia but one day a friend was telling me about her brothers and how their dentist was wonderful with the parents and daughters but her brothers swore he was a sadist, turned out it was the same dentist.  Can't prove anything, dentist most likely dead as this was the 1950s and early 60s so I'll never know if my husband hated him because of his phobia or if his phobia was because of a sadistic dentist.

I've been lucky with the dentists I've seen although one did get struck off but that was a complicated story and wasn't because he was bad at being a dentist but perhaps the admin should have been done by someone else.

Lour_2 My friend went to the same dentist that I think did unnecessary work in my mouth.  It was during a recent conversation with her about my teeth when she just pipped up and said she wishes she never let him anywhere near her mouth, she also said she'd noticed that when her children had a checkup he used the same instruments in their mouths, would think even back then that would of been a no no.
