Mulled wine

Which brand do you find the best? I personally have found it is a bit hit and miss between brands.

I currently have a bottle of M&S and its not very nice at all, I have had to add sugar to it (i never add sugar to anything!!!) it improved slightly but i wont be buying it again

Last year I had sainsburys and didnt think much to it, I have bought another bottle this year to see if they have improved.

The best one I have found so far is Asda. :)

Anyone tried any others?

Not much of a mulled wine drinker myself, being tt! However, relatives usually make their own rather than buy - get a reasnoble botle of red (a nice dark red, sorry I'm not good with names!), and gently heat with cloves, cinnamon sticks, allspice and a coulpe of star anise. Serve warm through a strainer (like tea from leaves). May also work out cheaper!

Lidls last year was very nice....
  • A topic close to my heart!! So far this year I have only tried Tesco's version which was on special offer last week and I am very impressed! - going back tonight to stock up! 'Blueberries, orange, cinnamon, cloves, corriander, lemon, fennel, nutmeg and cardemon'

I also find the attempts I have to mull my own are never very successful, probably cos I don't add enough sugar - feels like an alien concept to add sugar to anything!

This is one thing I find it isnt cheaper to make yourself.

I have made it before when I havent been able to find it but mulled wine is cheaper per bottle than your average bottle of wine. £2.99 - £3.99 for a bottle. An average bottle of red is about £4 - £5 then you need to add to it.

I agree, Tesco's is lovely. Me and mum sat there and had a bottle between us the other night all nice and warm in the free Baileys latte mugs we got last year!

Aldi's Gluhwein is lovely...just like the stuff they sell at the christmas markets!

It costs £2.75 a bottle, so a bargain too! :)

  • You can get a bottle of cheap red from a supermarket for around 2.99 then add the spices you already (hopefully) have in (e.g. cinnamon). I always add a bit of brandy (cheap one, of course) and some sliced orange. Even if you have to buy the "teabags" of mulled wine spice (Tesco have them at the moment for just over £1) I still find it cheaper, and nicer to make your own.

Have tried a few of the supermarket mulled wines this year and don't like any of them much so far. Agree about the M&S one - I tried it and it hardly tasted of anything. In fact, I'm fast going off M&S wine generally. Bought a bottle of their 19.99 champagne which was about half price at 9.99 last week (it was a friend's 40th birthday party) and it was tasteless; no better than a 3.50 bottle of Cava!

This is the recipe I use....

    ½ pint water
    4 oz. Sugar
    4 cloves
    2 inch stick cinnamon
    2 lemons
    1 bottle wine
    1 orange

Boil water, sugar and spices together. Add the lemons, stir and leave to stand for 10 minutes. Pour back into the saucepan and add red wine. Heat but do not boil. Strain the wine into a bowl and serve hot, decorated with orange and lemon slices. Makes about 1 ½ pints
