If you need a Mortgage the lender will insist on the transaction being handled by a Solicitor (who is on their panel), with that in mind it would it not make sense to seek the advice of the same Solicitor as to the usual/best way of handling the transaction.1

I was wondering about solicitor panels. Can lenders actually insist on the use of their own panel lawyers? Given the differing advice kindly offered so far, I've approached the same firm acting in the Estate's probate process, but they are not on HSBC's panel it seems.0

The Lender can insist on a Panel Solicitor to carry out the legal work they require (essentially the work they carry out on behalf of the lender is work to protect the lender). You can always choose your own Solicitor to carry out the legal work on the transaction on your behalf but splitting work between two solicitors will usually cost you more.1
