Follow sourcrates advise and send off SARs on those that you are querying - then if nothing turns up regarding defaults you should complain to the original creditor and keep complaining.  I did that with Halifax, back in my DMP days, even though the debt had been sold on and had in fact been settled.  I dug up the name and address of the CEO and went straight to the top!  Even more bizarre is that I got a refund from Hfx, this year, with a letter saying that having reviewed their records they feel they hadn't acted correctly in dealing with my account when I fell into arrears (back in 2013) - go figure!

As things stand if you clear those debts then the marker will stay on your file for 6 years from the date you settled, it won't matter if you pay in full or make partial payments (full and finals).  If they were to put defaults on now, then you've nothing to gain by that - what you need are those backdated defaults.

Thanks so much for replying. I feel like this is a total minefield!
So can I settle the debts and then fight for a backdated default to be added? Or do I need to do this before I made a settlement offer?
