Mortgage: Overpaying For Just One Year?
Firewish2020

I have used the excellent MSE mortgage overpayment calculator and can obviously see overpaying your mortgage shaves off years and money in the long term.
But is it worth overpaying for just ONE year. Say, £300 extra a month?
I understand the answer is probably yes, but with half a consideration to keep some cash reserves in this uncertain times, will the benefit of x amount of years off the mortgage outweigh keeping the cash close at hand?
Thanks in advance for any patient answers

You should always have accessible cash savings for unexpected financial events. With interest rates on credit cards any savings made can soon disappear. Overpay the mortgage by whatever you can sensibly afford. Ultimately the mortgage for most people is their single monthly committment. Once it's gone takes pressure off daily life.1

Thank you. We have been VERY frugal for a couple of decades, so the mortgage is the only real debt we have. Losing that around 60 (ish) would hopefully paper over the cracks of not having great pensions arranged.Thrugelmir said:You should always have accessible cash savings for unexpected financial events. Overpaying the mortgage can become addictive once you start. A good discipline.0
