My mother in law recently bought and has a mortgage free house but after moving into the property found a number of alterations and adaptations are now needed to allow her to continue living in the property. Does anyone know what options are available bearing in mind that she is 91 and lives on her pension, although she does not have to pay any bills other than some care costs

Does she have a social worker?
Has she been assessed for her care needs?
It's worth speaking to social work department as it is in their best interests that she remains at home for as long as possible, rather than having to pay care home fees.
  • Yes, she has had an OT assessment but they will only contribute 80% towards the furniture for the installation of a wetroom. This would be fine except she needs to convert a downstairs WC and utility cupboard [5ft x 10ft] into a wet-room, and also convert the present open plan kitchen/lounge into a bedroom with modular kitchen in order to live on the ground floor.

If she cannot get a grant then I suggest financing it yourself, you will probably get it back at some point in the future anyway.

80% covered by the LA won't leave that much left to finance, maybe a few thousand at best. The conversion of the WC into a wetroom is made much cheaper than it would have been by the already existence of a water supply, drainage and electrics.

That was just bathroom furniture I think, not the labour cost or any other additional materials.
