Halford card

I was given a £40 Halford card for xmas, I purchased a RYOBI one drill online and went to get a spare battery from a halfords close to where I work, I have tried 5 times in 4 weeks and the 2 Amp Ryobi One Battery is never in stock not has been in stock, I can buy it on line but you cannot use Gift cards online at Halfords, it has been suggested I buy it, take it back to the shop refund it then rebuy it with the card, does this sound unreasonable by Halfords, this is the only item in their rather overpriced shop I want and im not going to chase all over town to buy one, can I demand a refund on the card as Halfords cant deliver the goods (excuse the pun)
