Can I sell sunflower seeds to make some extra cash?

As a result of no maintenance For three months plus threat of redundancy I am trying to find ways to make some extra money; my father has suggested selling sunflowers seeds from their many plants - is this legally allowed ?

You can have £1000 of sales before you'd need to register as self employed, so you can definitely sell them :)

Where were you planning on selling them and what for?
What aspect were yout concerned about - food hygiene?

Pedant alert - it's could have, not could of.

There may be phytosanitary issues, and export would encounter more problems than they're worth. One seed catalogue I buy from is a nominal "club" due to issues on seed selection and approval. Have a look at the Real Seeds website for some of the potential issues.
  • I think it is not a good idea.

I suspect that you would be limited to selling them as wild bird food only, possibly from a market stall or similar.
Really can't see that the returns would be worth the effort and outlay involved.

As others have said it depends what you'd be selling them for.  There's nothing illegal about selling them.  But there are regulations about what they might be sold as.  So probably not as human food, probably ok for bird food (though even bird food has some regulations I think - certainly for peanuts because of aflatoxins or something like that).

The least regulated is selling them as what they are - seeds for growing sunflowers - i.e for gardeners. There would be little profit in that though, unless you packaged them up as 'Grow Your Own Sunflower kits'.  If you google that you'll find loads of people selling a few seeds - in a box with a handful of compost etc - for a premium price!  That's more effort of course - and extra stuff to buy and put in the 'kit' - and you'll be competing with all those others.  But those others are, in effect, selling a handful of cheap as chips seeds at a premium - that's how to make money!
