Fuel Cell Boilers - Thoughts?

This thread has re-ignited my interest in this technology. I just need to ponder whether the issue about excess heat in summer is really a show stopper and whether the inclusion of a large Tesla style battery would allow us to go off the electrical grid completely (except perhaps for export of excess electricity).1

We are big hot water users so no excess heat problem for us so I am hoping that the new govt green scheme might make this make a lot of sense come the autumn, especially as we currently get 26p/unit for exports under a v2g trial. Hopefully an extra kw of export would not be enough for the DNO to kybosh the idea.Pile_o_stone said:This thread has re-ignited my interest in this technology. Thought I would resucitate this thread as it gets a mention on Electrek
https://electrek.co/2025/12/20/the-backup-battery-choice-you-didnt-know-you-had-natural-gas-fuel-cell/
Seems very odd that electricity from gas powered CCGT (60% efficient) costs 4x as much as gas per kwh whereas having a home natural gas fuel cell could give 1 electricity kwh for the cost of 2.7kwh of gas (Viessmann vitovalor2) - even before considering that the fuel cell can also provide useful heat.
Perhaps combined with a battery (and solar for the summer months when the extra heat would be wasted) one could abandon electricity and switch to single fuel gas living?!I think....0
