'97 (Mortgage Style) Student Loan nearly expired, but may need to start paying it back
Hello all.
I wondering what happens if you start paying back a student loan near the end of the 25 year expiry period. Do you pay it back in full, or only until the loan expires.
I graduated in 2000, and have never so far exceeded the deferment threshold, but may be close this and following years. So I'm wondering if I exceed the threshold do I pay the loan back entirely, or do I just pay in installments until the 25 year point is reached (2025)?

Anyone have any insights? It would appear from these words: https://www.legislation.gov.uk/uksi/1998/211/schedule/2/paragraph/12/made
that you pay it back until it reaches age-related cancellation then the balance is cancelled, but I'm biased...0 -
It will depend when you took it out.
If you took it out in 1990-1997 and aged under 40:
Earlier of 25 years after your first payment of your last loan agreement (usually the start of your final year), or when you reach age 50
If you took it out in 1990-1997 and aged over 40:
When you reach 60

If you are on plan 1 (starting the course before 1/9/2012) if taken out before 2005/6 academic year is written off when you're 65 not after 25 years, that is for Plan 1 taken out after 2006/7 and it's 25 years from the April you were first due to repay. If you are in Scotland it's 65 or 30 years after the April when you were first due to repay (2006/7 or earlier) or 30 years full stop for dates after
If you took it out in 1997 and are on plan 1 then no, it's not being written off in 2025, it'll last until you are 65

The wording implies if you pay this year, it will trigger the 25 year clock unfortunately0
