You just need to cross out the name of the product on the voucher and write in the name of something you have in your basket using a red crayon. Most supermarkets accept these amendments

To be fair, Tesco was the go to shop for giving in money off vouchers when not buying the product. That was quite a few years ago but the money we saved....!

It used to be possible (and widely used) in various supermarkets in the past, but gradually they all stopped.

To be fair, it did used to be a fairly common practice

    Ditto!
I think Tesco was the last to stop accepting them, but I’m pretty sure most of the ‘big 4’ (at the time) did it too, although they didn’t all advertise it 😉

But wasnt that for money off in a competitors supermarket rather than a product specific one, for example, "50p off Heinz Tomato Ketchup"? The OP is, to my mind anyway, on about the latter type of voucher that wont mention a supermarket at all on them.

In any case, even if the voucher did say "50p off Heinz Tomato Ketchup in Asda", surely Tesco only honoured it back in the day if you actually bought the product?

My guess would be that if they stocked that product; they would accept it since they just passed them on to the manufacturer irrespective of whether you had bought it.  As long as the number of coupons being redeemed didn't look excessive as a proportion of actual sales, how would the manufacturer know?
I need to think of something new here...

No, as long as they sold the product, they would accept the voucher even if you weren’t personally purchasing it
