Does available credit affect my mortgage application?

My wife and I are looking to buy a new house later this year. We currently have a small amount of credit card debt which we are able to clear before we start the buying process. We would like to keep the credit card open for emergencies and security of using a credit card. Will having credit available as opposed to debt have an adverse effect on a mortgage application?

Most people have several credit cards. The important thing is to clear the debt.
Use your cards for more than just emergencies. Use them for everything you can.0
