Quality telescope

I really want to buy a telescope as I've noticed the sky above my house is a lot clearer recently - less pollution, coincidence, or just my imagination?? I've been shopping around and there seems to be a huge gap between what's on the market. You either pay low and get equipment that really isn't worth it, and the reviews continue to be underwhelming until you reach the £800 mark, which is more than I want to pay for a fad hobby as an amateur.
Does anybody here have an tips or recommendations?

If you google on 'amateur astronomy telescope' you get lots of links to organisations which have done recent comparisons. Might be worth a browse.1
