How many hard searches before it damages my credit file?

How many hard searches for a mortgage within a one month period can I get away with before it damages my credit file?
I have one so far which was referred to the underwriter and am still awaiting the outcome. However, if it goes south, then I'd like to be prepared for the next stage: A further high street lender, or a local broker with a small range of products, but carefully targeted.
Alternatively, buy a cheaper property at auction (I don’t have a clue what I’d be doing ! )

There is not really a number. It depends on the lender and you.

It also depends on credit agency.
I did one hard search early June and It only shows on Equifax. I then did hard search on mortgage application in June also and it only shows on Experian. Both CRA’a have my full 13 years address history. Not all lenders report to all CRA for enquiries0
