Do I really need a dedicated home charging unit?

Hi all, I have just had a Kia Niro PHEV delivered through work however I am uncertain if I truly need a dedicated home charging unit. It charges on a 3 pin plug in around 3 hours and although a dedicated charger would do it in under 2 hours the time to charge is not problematic. I have an outdoor 3 pin plug. I see some manufacturers websites and home charging sales sites say the high demand can damage a 3 pin plug etc. Naturally if I don’t need one I won’t get one but would welcome some advice and thoughts. Thanks.

If you've got an outdoor socket then you'll be fine with the granny charger. If you were using it multiple times a day then it might be worth the investment, but for a PHEV I wouldn't bother.1

Thanks, that’s what I thought really, likely charging no more than once a day.0

Be aware that if you are using a 13amp socket there is the risk of overheating. You should check the plug & socket frequently when using the granny charger to see if they are getting hot.

Depends on the state of your three pin plug. If you're dangling an extension lead out a window that's not great. If it's a properly wired in external plug that's better.
