Self employment CIS travel expenses - self assessment

Hi,
My partner is a subcontractor working for a contractor on a self employed basis. The contractor pays him his salary through the CIS scheme, but they also pay £10 per day for travel costs which he uses to pay for fuel to get to work (this travel is not included in the CIS statement). This only covers the fuel and he still pays for the upkeep of the car inc insurance tax etc.

For his self assessment it’s really confusing what he can claim in terms of travel expenses? I’m not sure if he needs to declare the travel money and then put through expenses and if so what expenses can he claim? I can’t find much online to help.
Liz.
