Anyone ever used Gekkodvd.co.uk?

Hi

I'm after a copy of the lion king on dvd and this site is offering it for £14.99, which is substantially cheaper than elsewhere. Has anyone used them or know anything about them?

  • Well... I ordered from them today (using PayPal) and expect my delivery "within 2 - 5 days".

(I was after the animated 101 Dalmations DVD - Disney 1961 - couldn't find it anywhere else).

Anyway, will update this thread when the goods turn up...

...Update! Goods turned up approximately 2 weeks after order, but I got what I asked for, so I'm happy enough. Not sure I'd order lots of items through this site, but if I couldn't find it elsewhere, I would use them again.

It does appear that all goods are shipped from Thailand (same as dvd.co.uk?), so may not be identical to a product originally destined for the UK.

  • I have just sent an email to Gekko to ask for their business address. Their site appears unusual to me: the security logo does not actually link to a security site, and the ' Design by CmBit ' at the page footer links to the gekko.co.uk page only, not the web designer page.

I'll let you know what response I get from them.
  • No response yet...
  • Still no response.

Maybe they're on holiday.... or really busy.
  • Well, you could try asking them - that's what I did when I wanted to order half a dozen DVDs. You would think it is not unreasonable to ask a company where they are based, if you are doing them the favour of giving them your custom. I made the mistake of pointing out that I thought they were obliged to give contact details, but this is the reply I got 4 days later:

    "Hi Paul,
You are actually quite confused, there are no such laws pertaining to the use of a .co.uk domain, and company details need only be provided by Limited Companies.
If you wish to find our registered address then simply use whois and perform a search.
    Regards
    Gekko DVD"

In the time it took them to type out that spiteful answer, they could have simply said where they were based, and reassured me that they were a reputable company etc..

Instead I think it says a lot about this company's ethos and mindset that this is the way they choose to reply to a genuine enquiry. Imagine how they might deal with a complaint.

I checked whois and they seem to be registered in Arizona.

I replied in stronger terms, with an over and out - I must admit I deleted the reply I got back before reading it, as I don't like to receive what I anticipated might be an abusive email.

Anyway, I found 3 of the titles I wanted (the expensive ones), at the same price for UK sellers on Ebay; the rest I bought from Play.com.

My brief exchange of communication with them demonstrates what a minefield the internet is, and how different people's ideas of good business practice can be.

The net result of this is that a few people on this forum will now be aware of my brief & unpleasant experience with them, even before ordering anything.

Make your own minds up !
  • Hi,

I ordered Beauty and the Beast from Gekko DVD, it took nearly 2 weeks to arrive.

I contacted them to ask why it took so long and they answered after about 3-4 days (though the email was polite) and sent me a link to the shipping info page which does actually state that delivery takes about 10-14 days AFTER POSTING.. wow, but it turns out that it's sent from overseas. (the description says dispatch normally next day, I got confused and actually thought that meant delivery and I did not read the shipping page)

Overall I'm neither impressed nor unhappy with gekko. The DVD I got was as described..but the description is vague anyway. Instead of describing the region it simply says compatible with UK/Europe, which it is but it's not from the UK.

The actual DVD is not the same as the rest of my Disney collection, and to be truthful I was disappointed. Really, I should have read the home page, or the terms and noticed that they sell IMPORTS. Imports are not the same quality as UK ones, though to be fair the movie is fine and works faultlessly on my DVD player.

BOTTOM LINE: I got what I paid for, no more no less. It took ages to arrive, the support was slow to answer, the quality of imports looks cheap compared to my UK stuff BUT I got the movie I wanted for much much less than if I bought it local or on Amazon.

IF you want it next day, or if you want a proper UK one then you need to pay a lot more.

    You decide!
  • Hi, I ordered the lion king from Gekko.co.uk because I thought I was getting a bargain.

It took almost 3 weeks to arrive and when it did it was an import from Thailand. They do have this information somewhere on the site ( someone mentioned it in a previous comment) but I have yet to find it. Had I known I would never have bought the dvd as the quality is just not the same. I emailed them asking for a refund and they were quite sarcastic and abrupt when they did reply (4 days later) basically telling me they couldnt authorise a refund to me (??) despite the fact that I the seal had not been broken and I had contacted them on the day I received it as per their instructions on the website.

To sum it all up Im a very disappointed customer and would totally recommend you all avoid this website, for the sake of a few extra pound it is well worth it knowing the quality and service you will get elsewhere
  • I ordered 3 DVDs of these people they arrived about 3 weeks later. I have examined them and am certain they are good quality fakes. The printing is good but not quit correct. The packages state region 3, they are not they are region free, they are not protected by CCS (Content Scrambling System)
I have never seen an unprotected DVD by a major studio. Also the label is marked DVD9 (dual layer) they are in fact dvd5 single layer original DVDs are nearly always dual layer

  • I ordered a couple of DVDs for my daughter for Christmas. What wasn't mentioned until they had been paid for was that they were being sent by airmail. They eventually arrived from Thailand in damaged packaging. When they arrived it was clear they were counterfeit. I've contacted Gekko but all they have offered so far is to let me send them back to Thailand (at my cost) for a refund. The counterfeit DVD industry funds organised crime which causes pain and suffering to thousands, children included, so buying Disney DVDs for your kids from these people, as I did in good faith, and keeping them once you know they are counterfeit is a bit sick really, isn't it? I've reported Gekko to FACT - perhaps others should too.
