Sainsburys' "Special" Ofers

This is the third week in a row that I have had to take my receipt to Customer Services because special offers havent been taken off at the till. Until this week it had been for paltry amounts but last week they had some fancy hairspray on offer - Tresemme, seen it in the hairdressers' - at 2 for £5 so I thought I would treat myself and daughter. Upon checking the bill later I found that it had come up at it's original price of £3.99 each - nearly £3 overcharge for the 2!
Just thought peeps should be aware.

Me too! I am now starting to think that there are doing this deliberatley now.
So may I suggest if we could right a letter to them and send it off. (One stamp and one envelope could save us from queing at the customer services every time we shop.
If it makes it easier One of us could put a complaint letter here and we could all template it, and add where your local store is, print, and sign. Then Post.
I do beleive that there are better peeps out there with putting the right words. If last resort i will do it.
But anyone welcome to do it?

No, it's not a conspiracy. Either the ticket on the shelf is wrong where maybe a product is not on 'special' anymore. Therefore the system has been changed, but the advertising not removed. OR the system has not been changed to take account of the offer. Either way, customer services will notify the office and the price will be honoured.

Thanks for your warning, Ellie - but to be really fair, this could happen in *any* shop and isn't just restricted to Sainsbury's.

The best advice for *everyone* is ... check your receipt *before* you leave!
    That way you:

    a) notice any errors immediately
    b) save yourself any necessity for a return journey

In the days of cash ... would you really have walked out of the store and not checked you'd been given the right change?

We, as customers, have our own obligation to check our receipts - don't we? Market stalls don't (in the main) deal in electronic tills/calculations ... yet they also make mistakes, the only difference is, consumers fall into the trap of "trusting" machine's over man ... but should always bear in mind that machine's are only as good as the *person* who inputs the data into them ;)

Yes, I have also found the odd mistake on a till receipt - most especially as I tend to use supermarkets for their "deals" and "reduced" items, which aren't always reflected at the checkouts, for whatever reason ... but, I've never forgotten the "cash only" days when any self respecting shopper back then would not only check their change, but read the receipt *before* leaving the shop!
(Anyone else remember when shops has notices stating: Check your change before you leave as mistakes cannot be rectified once you've left the shop? Or something like that LOL )

Seriously, Ellie, that advice is as good today as it was then ;)

PS:  I do not work for any supermarket, let alone the one you've mentioned! LOL

  • We have stopped shopping at Sainsburys for the same reason. Every week when I checked the receipt there was always a mistake. I got so fed up. It's well embarrassing queing up for small amounts, but its the principle. Sometimes it was larger amounts and more than one mistake. I did complain to the manager and they apologised, human error inputting data on computer etc but it still kept happening so decided only option not to shop there.

I have had the same bother at our local morrisons store - Last time it happened i told them I would not be back. Told them I am treated like a criminal every time I go back to the counter - he refunded the full amount to me on that occasion. I go through stages where there is something wrong on every shop - I go 3 times a week after work!

I'm sorry but I have to disagree with you to some extent, whilst these reasons stated above can apply quite frequently store managers struggling to meet targets will allow "overlap" to take place this is when an offer runs out and point of sale material is still displayed, because the manager knows that for every customer that notices the mistake there will be ten or upwards that don't, he or she can spend all day apologising to customers "I'll get someone to sort it out straightaway here's your refund Mrs pain in the !!!!!!!" there are many ways of skimming the customer such as placing higher priced products or larger packs in promo areas, ask yourself how many times you've picked up a pack and thought "hang on the offer is for the 500g pack and these are the 1kg pack etc" in a large store you only need three or four products set up to skim in order to make a huge difference in your weekly turnover and thus meet targets you otherwise wouldn't have, its not just Sainsbury's, all stores are equally as bad bear in mind todays Sainsbury's manager is tomorrows Tesco manager and will take any bad habits with him.

Write a letter or phone customer services telling them you intend to shop in Tesco in future as they have a refund and replace policy for overcharged items, they won't do a lot but may send you some gift vouchers to entice you into their store but these swings to competitors as result of complaint are recorded by all stores and if enough people complain to the others stating Tesco refund and replace policy has drawn them away with the reassurance they will never be overcharged again without coming out on top then the rest of the stores will adopt the policy quick enough we just need to apply the correct pressure.

After this happening to me numerous times, I now religiously check my receipts before I leave the store. It also happens in Tesco. I dont know about Morrisons as I dont shop there very often. I would say every other time there is a mistake on my receipt. I was once in Tesco where the man in front of me was overcharged £120. Yes, £120. It was at Xmas time, but theres still no excuse. I think it could be deliberate. Why I say this, is because every time it happens, they are not particularly apologetic about it.

I always check my receipt but a few days ago went to Asda and bought a top for £3, groceries, swimsuit for daughter and husband put 2 bags of nuts in basket - like a fool I left him and 19 year old daughter at till to pay while I checked something else.

Looked at receipt and charged for 2 tops - not one!!!

Went to customer services and got refund!

Got home - husband can only find one bag of nuts but not the 2 that we paid for!!!

As store is 15 miles away- I am not going back.

Why is no-one in my family capable of checking receipt or shopping - only me???
