    It's worthy of note that the travel company will apply the same rules to everyone - if you wouldn't be entitled to a refund / change of dates normally, then your circumstances won't entitle you to one either. 

    Not trying to make an already bad situation worse, but it's something to be prepared for - you'll be treated the same as everyone else with a booking for the same holiday.

    If your doctor will give  him an unfit to fly certificate you could try claiming on your insurance.
