Pension contributions for under 22 years old

Hi, I'm just starting work and my employer is being difficult about enrolling me in a work-based pension scheme. I am 21 so I know I can't be auto-enrolled but I want to opt-in. My salary is sufficient to allow my opt-in but my employer is refusing to pay their contribution - is this legal?

It would appear from this article that if you insist on joining at 21, then the employer has to make contributions . As long as you are earning at least £6240 pa.1 -
OP isn't 'joining' - they are opting in, which is a crucial difference.Albermarle said:https://www.moneyadviceservice.org.uk/en/articles/automatic-enrolment-if-youre-21-or-under

OP, how long have you worked for the employer? You say you are 'just starting work' so the employer may be exercising their right to delay enrolling a new hire until they have completed 3 months of service.

Thanks for taking the time to offer advice. My employer has been less than clear and the advice on this forum has helped me understand their position. They have mentioned the 3 month period but it came across more like a probation. I’ll pick up on this at work once the three month period is up. Hopefully this thread will help others in a similar position.0
