Have the water about a third/half way up the basin. Keep checking the water level and top up with boiling water as often as necessary.
Once it's made, 'feed' it with rum or brandy a couple of times and it will be delicious!0 -
My daughter has solved the "start cooking your puddings in November" problem by doing little individual "pudlings" for everyone in some little foil "basins" she got (IIRC) from Lakeland. The acquisition of wealth is no longer the driving force in my life.0

You're all absolute stars - I spent yesterday steaming my pudding and today I peeled off the paper and inspected it - it looks and smells fabulous! I had no problems at all with the plastic pudding basin - propped it up on a pyrex plate, which worked a treat. Left the lid on the boiling saucepan so it didn't need topping up with water too often.
Gave it a quick feed with rum, now it's tucked away waiting for the big day!
Thanks again everyone!0 -
MIL2B gave me a homemade christmas pudding yesterday her nun friend had given her, none of my OHs family like it except FIL2B and he cant have it for health reasons this year.
I had already refused taking home 2 turkey legs (id seen how she defrosted and prepared the turkey on the 22nd and being pregnant didnt wanna chance food poisioning! ) So felt obliged to accept the pudding... even though i already had one mum had given me - a mini luxury one dad was given last year by a client (very posh rrp £12 in sainsburys one)....
ANYWAY, now i have 2 xmas puddings to eat... which is fine as i love em.. except MIL2B told me to "steam it for an hour and 20 mins"... but im not sure how to do it as never had one before.... Mum has tried to explain over the phone... but im not sure still.. im intruiged at using the slow cooker?! Or maybe a microwave?
Do i reallly need to steam the pudding before eating? Or can i just warm it in the microwave and put lashings of custard/cream on it???
I still have a whole christmas cake my mum made me to eat aswell......as OH doesnt like it......... and a 1lb tub of mincemeat as i didnt get round to making mince pies..... so im just looking at ways of using up the fruit cakes/puddings as general puddings over next few weeks and with the least "faffing"
This baby is gonna come out looking like a currant! :rotfl:0
