Handing in my notice

I wish to hand my notice in on my payday. I have worked in a sales roll for 5 years. If I give 1 months notice, what would happen? They told somebody last year they had to sit with the admin team and do that job for 1 month so the salesperson then left without any money. I want to hand it in and get 1 months money plus the average commission holiday pay for the 12 days I am owe . Can they make me go on admin if I do this?

I take when you say that they left with any money you are on a minimum wage and then the rest of the wage is commission? So in effect the salesperson who left was actually working for their minimum wage in the admin team?
If it is in your job description to give you duties which are not unreasonable then yes.
A company that is losing an employee is unlikely to care whether the employee is unhappy that they don't get commission and average holiday pay on leaving.

You have an option not to give notice and just leave when you were planning to and they would have to pay you what you've earned.  But you could burn your bridges here if the new employer doesn't work out.

Correct. If I just hand it in and leave on payday I presume they have to pay me my average commission holiday pay I'm owed for the untaken days?

    What does your contract say?

This is up to your employer and your relationship with them. It is within their right to assign you to alternative positions as they please. If they re-position you during your notice period as they deem appropriate, they can do so. If you walk out like the somebody you mentioned earlier, they are not entitled to pay you. If you have a particularly good performance rate, they may keep you on sales, they may not. They call the shots, sorry.
The best course of action would be to happily hand in your notice stating your positive differences and happily take on the consequences. Your advantage is surely in your new opportunity, which of course you have lined up.

Thanks for the advice I would be going to a direct competitor. My contract says very little

An employer can determine the job they want an employee to do, so Yes they can put you into the Admin section for your final month.  I can understand why they wouldn't want a sales person to have contact with customers once they have handed in their notice.
If you are suggesting that you should be able to hand in your notice, leave that day, and still get paid for the notice period you are in for a disappointment.

Going to work for a direct competitor would immediately get you taken off your sales role, I would expect.

What does your contract say about how much notice has to be given by you?

What 12 days?  Holiday?  How is that time (not pay) calculated?
