Plus, I have the added issue of living in an apartment with no charging points in the car park yet. Something tells me I wouldn't be popular if I trailed a power cable out of the window!!  :D
depends which floor you live on, but yes, elec just isn't practical for a lot of people - any house without dedicated offroad parking for example.
I think our overarching views on cars may be similar

It is the administering of the non-payment by DD that costs the money.  These days so many people seem to bounce DDs that they have to charge.  If you pay all the charge in one go then there is no chance of a DD being bounced.  Comes under the heading of you get what you pay for.

Just to be clear - if you started an arrangement to pay for "road tax" then you got your tax disc for the year.  There were no additional charges related to that.  It has always been about the extra it costs to pay in installments.

I won't sign any more petitions on the .gov website.

The people at the other end are incompetent at sending emails, revealing everyone's email addresses to all recipients. This leads to later receipt of spam if some of those get a virus that hacks their email for more targets.

@JamoLew - I think they might be, down to the make at the moment, but I needed an estate so got the A6 - it was the prettiest estate car I ccould afford when I bought it   :D

@badmemory - I agree that non-payed DD's are an issue but the cost of these shouldn't be by people who pay on time? This doesn't happen with other agreements, e.g. my credit card, I'm sure they have issues with returned DD's all the time for other people, but I don't need to cover that cost unless it is my DD with the issue. Why should the DVLA be any different in that respect?
And absolutely, the issue I have is that if I were to pay in installments, and I pay on time each time then why should I have to pay more than paying in one lump sum? In terms of administration, there is no difference for the DVLA for me if I pay up front or in installments so long as my payments clear each month.

@redux - fair enough, I've signed a few in my time and haven't ever noticed any bulk emails from them, but maybe I've been lucky.

All payers of CCs who do not pay "to quote Martin 'in full'" are paying for those others who never pay or pay late.  It may not say that in their agreement but it is factored in by the co who owns the debt.  It is part of the business model.

There is no similarity between your council tax which already factors in the delay in payments.  As in pay in Apr May June July & Aug for the payment originally due in April & pay in Sept Oct Nov Dec & Jan for the payment due end of Sept.  The Road tax does not factor in those delayed payments which is why there is an additional charge.

It does cost the recipient more to receive 12 payments than it does to receive one as you will find out if you ever need to run a business bank account.  I am just hoping that personal accounts will not go back to the charges for each transaction as it used to be many years ago.  They are heading that way.  I do not look forward to taking out large sums of cash one Saturday a month to charge round paying all the bills which are now done by DD, all to avoid the extra charges.  But if you are well off it won't matter to you, but then if you were well off you wouldn't be paying your road tax monthly would you?  I am well below average earnings, so definitely not well off, but I am organised & pay my road tax annually.  Partly because I am a tight git & resent paying the extra charges!

@badmemory - thanks for the update, I hadn't considered the banking costs for receiving the extra payments. I'm not going to share the petition any further - of course I can't cancel it, but it's not looking like it will get discussed anyway :)
I too hope we don't end up having to pay to use our accounts, fingers crossed they'll not start down that route, I think there will be a big outcry if they need to do that, not least because of the massive payout's a lot of banking execs seem to receive  :/
And like you, I am also a tight git and resent paying the extra charges  :D
