Work in a bookies

hi, does anyone work in a bookies and has your bankruptcy or insolvency caused you any problems? I checked the company handbook and it says they can carry out credit checks on staff and if found to have ccj’s or bankruptcy they have the right to not employ you. Also that bankruptcy could lead to disciplinary action and possibly dismissal.
Im confused as to why a personal bankruptcy would warrant disciplinary action and how likely this is.
it doesn’t actually say you must inform them though.
The job role is just a part time customer service/cashier role. Not management

Would their credit check show as a search on my file?
this has got me worried slightly.

I think the fear is that a hone who is in serious debt problems, maybe tempted to act unethically to get money. A role which involves cash handling is especially risky for any employer, although I'm not convinced bankruptcy adds to the risk

So they would potentially start disciplinary process for you potentially doing something wrong. That makes no sense to me. Let’s hope should they discover this then a 8 year perfect record would count for something. I never felt the need to steal when I had money troubles and certainly don’t when I have no debt!

Are you a member of a trade union?
If so ring them for advice.
When you were declared bankrupt it is a public notice - in London Gazette - most financial services employers would check that against their staff lists.
Perhaps they don't mind or don't know?
  • Don't know I know in PPI industry it was quite full of ex. insurance bods.
In 2013. I had to ask people if they had been br or were in a dro. Got past never had the supervisor come back with a claim form to be redone.
Went to a payday loan company interview last summer, done a role play to which I heard that is how we want our customers spoken too. (whether they wanted people or not who had loan experience) full-time hours were 21k that was like required 6 months without a loan and everyone else putting their hand up they didn't know what the company did kind of thing. Sometimes I think the ignorant the better.??? They seem to go with people who never had to have a payday loan and so didn't didn't know what it was, as sad as that is.
Seen someone cry at job value of £15,200  who said how their credit file stopped them in recruitment couple of years ago and then my work mate at the time asked br or prison as picked up I hadn't worked in an serious industry for 6 years.  (the insurance company at the time did keep me in mind if they were ever to open their own debt collection dept).

I have a friend who works for William hill HR and she has told me that due to handling cash it is classed as a financial role so bankruptcy would be untenable in the job role and anyone looking for or is currently in a job would either not be employed or would have their contract terminated also the credit check would be as per any hard check which companies use she stated it would be a hard check and not a soft check

See this I don’t understand really. I don’t actually have any financial problems now so how am I more risk. I’m going to keep quiet as it doesn’t say I have to notify them. I’ll just try and get a little bit of savings and hope. So does that mean I couldn’t work in a supermarket on the till or as a waiting staff? I just don’t see how my bankruptcy makes my employment untenable. It does say may result in dismal let’s hope it is just ‘may’ and not a certainty. They were notified 3 weeks ago of my NT tax code. I’m hoping this doesn’t put me on a to check list

    thanks for that info tho
