Fee transfer for mortgage borrowing - do I need to pay it

Hi there, this is my first post so apologies if I've done it incorrectly.  We are due to complete on moving mortgages to get a better deal and we are borrowing extra for a kitchen refurb.  When we completed the paperwork for the solicitor, we are asked if you want the balance by electronic transfer (fee to pay) or cheque.  We ticked cheque as I don't want to pay £72 for the transfer as we're in no rush now.  The solicitors have emailed me today to say that because they cannot go into the office to get the cheque, then they have to do it via bank transfer and we are therefore being charged the £72 which I think is wrong.  Any advice would be appreciated. Thanks, Sarah

If you want to avoid the fee, then tell them to wait until their offices reopen and then write the cheque.

That's a good idea, thanks.  Although it depends on when they reopen as we can wait but only until end of August.  I'll keep it in mind though. Thanks
  • You could maybe ask them to waive the fee since it's unfortunate but not your problem?

Target is to pay it off in 8 years (by October 2028). 8 years early.

Why can't they go into the office? Why don't they have the cheque book with them? Or why can't they ask the bank to send them new ones? They aren't being very proactive!
